THE NEW YORK LANDMARKS CONSERVANCY
The Landmarks Conservancy works in many directions on behalf of New York's architectural heritage. Our programs demonstrate that hands-on help for building owners is the key to successful preservation. By providing technical advice, financial aid, and education, the Conservancy contributes to economic revitalization of the City's neighborhoods and aesthetic rehabilitation of its much-loved older buildings.
The Conservancy is nationally and internationally recognized as a vocal and forward-thinking leader in the preservation movement. Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church - Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award winner
John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church - 333 Hart Street, Brooklyn
This massive church was built in 1888 as the jewel of St. John’s University’s first home in Brooklyn. It was designed in a Romanesque Revival style by pre-eminent religious property architect Patrick Keely.
In recent years, Saint John the Baptist has served as a neighborhood parish church but was not a welcoming sight. The building was in extremely poor condition, with leaks at the roofs, rusty and decayed sheet metal elements, boarded-up windows, and rotted wood window frames.
This project, completed over 11 years, has dramatically improved the handsome facade. All stonework was cleaned, repaired, and repointed. There are new roofs. An eight-foot-tall decorative frieze that runs along the entire building, and the cornices, gables, pinnacles, and gutters were replaced in lead-coated copper exactly matching the original. Stained-glass windows were restored with new hardwood outer frames and new protective glazing. The glorious 22-foot diameter rose window, which could not be restored, was replaced using laser-cut, solid mahogany components to replicate the original design. Once a worrisome eyesore, the church is once again a beacon to its community.

I know this NYLC post is 10 yrs old now - and NYC has endured a lot since then - but can anyone at the Conservancy perhaps clear-up some of the charges made in one of the comments below (re: visiting), and please update visitor/tour information for us? Thanks.

Why did they move it originally? It doesn’t seem like it was in the way of 143rd street
According to the Museum of the City of New York. By 1889, the Grange had fallen into disrepair and was set to be razed to make room for the expanding city grid. The estate sat on what was to be 143rd Street - the street would have run right through the house’s northwest corner. Luckily, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, in the midst of relocating from Greenwich Village, acquired the house and moved it a half block east and two blocks south, out of the way of the city’s bulldozers.
Ok. Based on the provided map it looks like the street would have only run through the house’s northwest lawn. Interesting stuff, thank you for the info and source.

Back when I lived it NYC my boyfriend and myself were walking by. We walked in and asked if we could take a look around. The only people there were the receptionist and concierge. No problem. Cannot believe you have to book a tour now.

Paint that thing! You can do better City of New York! The family restored it for you. The city just wants profits. Pay 6 New Yorkers for a week to paint it. Or two guys from anywhere else a day. Get a good coat of oil base on that wood.
